Another One Bites the Dust

Friday, January 5, 2018
It's a tough time to be a fan of craft distilling, if you're of the sort who considers that term as a placeholder for "micro" and "local". All around the country, favorite labels are falling prey to the deep pockets of portfolio companies such as Constellation Brands.

The most recent of these is Copper & Kings.

We're not going to argue the finer points here, mostly because we've already done that elsewhere, but for us, that's a non-starter. Now don't get us wrong, if you're just looking for good brandy, look no farther - Copper & Kings has it. But if you're looking to be part of the craft movement, we suggest looking somewhere else.

Understandably, Copper & Kings probably doesn't know that they've gone astray, and they definitely don't give a f*ck what some microblogger thinks about it. This is America after all - the whole point of starting the business was to make a ton of money, wasn't it?

Well, actually, no. And it certainly isn't what craft consumers are after.

So, because we kinda dug C&K, we wanted to give them a proper send-off. Cheers, mates!

Life, Distilled - Episode #8 - Ryan Montgomery

Tuesday, December 12, 2017
In this episode, our guest is also our host - Ryan Montgomery of Montgomery Distillery. What better time to truth our belief that Montgomery is the epitome of a craft distillery: independent, appropriately scaled, and focused on quality at every step of the process! Ryan also sheds some light on sourced whiskey and contract distilling from the whiskey distiller's perspective, and he assures us that he doesn't have any intention of selling out.

#DrinkingMusic: Shawn Baltazor and Adam Topol

Monday, December 11, 2017
NYC Improvisor Shawn Baltazor and Adam Topol (of Jack Johnson fame) team up to present a duo set at Basic Flowers on December 17th, 8pm. Topol and Baltazor will be presenting a set of drum-duets, drawing from a vast common language they share ranging from the folkloric repertoire of Cuba and South America, as well as improvisations inspired by masters Ed Blackwell and Billy Higgins.

“Baltazor paints music that greets the ears on this protean production ... Everything from dream sequences with strings to loping swing with attitude to glazed-over tales of yearning manages to appear at one time or another on this most fascinating of albums”

– Dan Bilawsky, All About Jazz

Listen here to Baltazor's acclaimed release, Lionsong and Topol's Regardless Of The Dark
