Balcones Named Texas Distillery of the Year

Wednesday, December 4, 2013
Texas craft whisky distillery Balcones has been named "Texas Distillery of the Year" at this year's New York International Spirits Competition. This marks another win for the small but highly decorated Waco-based craft distillery that has its sights set on not just making whisky in Texas, but creating a Texas whisky tradition. In addition to the honorary title, the panel of judges also awarded Balcones' Crooked Bourbon a Double Gold Medal.

According to their press release:
Balcones Crooked Bourbon is a special mingling of aged corn and malt whiskies, blended together and returned to select bespoke casks to create an extra deep, dark bourbon character. Though the whiskey has yet to be released, it has already won another Double Gold medal this year from the New York World Wine and Spirits Competition. Crooked Bourbon is the exploratory follow up to the distillery's Texas Straight Bourbon, released earlier this year, which was the first single full-size barrel of bourbon to ever be released in the state. The distillery plans to bottle the experimental Bourbon in early 2014.

"It's a true honor to be recognized in this way by such a prestigious competition. We are very pleased," said Chip Tate, president and head distiller of Balcones.
