where the world goes to discover craft spirits and the small batch lifestyle

Back in Black

The Surly Wench is the kind of place you would expect to find Social D playing if it was 1989. The decor is skulls, leather boots and chain wallets, and the color scheme black on black with accents of black. Several arcade games butt up against a row of booths along the wall, and a mural of a woman in red lingerie reads "the trouble with blondes and bullets." They host a monthly burlesque show and are likely strong supporters of the Tucson Roller Derby League.

They also stock several Arizona labels, including whiskey del bac from the locals at Hamilton Distillers. One house cocktail, the Triple Limey, seemed a likely candidate for Arizona Distilling Company's Desert Dry Gin, and the barmaid was more than happy to make the substitution. Although technically only a Double Limey, this combination was near perfection, providing a refreshing citrus retreat from the Southwestern heat that still fell in line with the Wench's overall vibe.

If you're ever in Tucson, pop in and tell them MicroShiner sent you.
