Drinking Music: Yasmine Hamden

Wednesday, March 26, 2014
While the Middle East isn't exactly considered a mecca for spirits (the region's predominant religion Islam forbids the use of alcohol), this certainly doesn't prevent the rest of us from enjoying a Persian-inspired cocktail while listening to the amazing new album Ya Nass from Lebanese artist Yasmine Hamden.

A ground-breaking fixture throughout the Middle East, Yasmine is largely unknown in the US and Europe. Not for long, however. Despite her largely foreign sound (she sings in Arabic), with collaborators such as filmmaker Jim Jarmusch bringing her sleek modern style into the spotlight, Hamden will undoubtedly make waves in even the most pop-centric musical landscapes. Her look and sound are both wildly exotic, but what is of even greater import is her remarkable authenticity. Imagine a Sade for the modern era.

So do yourself a favor. Mix up the cocktail below or another from this collection of Persian-inspired recipes, hit play, and enjoy!
Persian Ruby
1 oz. Vodka
2 oz. POM Wonderful 100% Pomegranate Juice
1 Splash of Lime Juice
Combine the vodka and pomegranate juice into a cocktail shaker with ice. Serve in a martini glass and garnish with a lime peel.
