Safeguarding a Hallowed Tradition

Friday, October 30, 2015
It seems every time you take a look at your Twitter feed, some niche interest is promoting another hashtag holiday. Whether that's #NationalVodkaDay, #AmericanBeerDay, or everyone's favorite, #NationalCatDay, you don't have to dig very deep to find something to celebrate.

And while we are certainly huge proponents of merrymaking, the downside of all this ebullience is that our traditional days of observance can, to some degree, get lost in the static. All due respect to National Hermit Day, but it seems a shame to devalue the cultural significance of Día de Muertos by putting it on par with  National Increase Your Psychic Powers Day.

Fortunately, the global candy consortium has no intention of allowing us to forget about Halloween, and given the accompanied custom, at least in the United States, of masquerade, its the near perfect opportunity to enjoy the spirit of the holiday and step outside yourself.

One great way to do this is by hosting a costume party, and then helping your guests get into character by serving up a Halloween cocktail punch based around your favorite craft spirits.

Rye is the rage, and many craft producers are now bottling barrel proof offerings that make a great punch foundation. Stillwagon is an Oregon micro-distiller whose flagship Devil's Own Rum comes in at a whopping 155 proof, which will turn a rum punch into an inhibition crushing party propellant that will have even that guy from your office who claims to "hate dressing up" doing the Monster Mash.

So do yourself a favor and forget that October 31st is the Day of the Seven Billion, and have a Happy Halloween instead!

Colorful Cocktails to Revive Your Inner Leprechaun

Monday, March 16, 2015
While many enjoyed St Paddy's celebrations over the weekend, March 17th is the traditional date set aside for observing the death of Ireland's patron saint.

With this in mind, and for the diehards who may or may not be fortunate enough to live in such Irish strongholds as Boston, Butte, or Dublin, we offer up a couple of festively colored cocktails, compliments of our friends at Privateer Rum.

St. Patty’s Smash
2oz Privateer Silver Rum
1oz Fresh Lime Juice
1oz Simple Syrup
10 Mint leaves
In a rocks glass combine all ingredients and muddle to extract mint flavor.  Fill the glass with crushed ice to hold the mint leaves at the bottom.  Garnish with a mint sprig and enjoy!

Aloha Leprechaun
2oz Privateer Silver
1oz Pineapple Juice
1oz Orange Juice
1oz Blue Curacao
1/2oz Fresh Lemon Juice
Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and give a quick shake.  Pour cocktail into a glass and garnish with a pineapple wedge.
