There is so much about Hawaii to enjoy, it seems almost unfair that it should have an established craft presence as well, but it does. Fact is, given how far removed the islands are from pretty much everything, micro-distilling makes perfect sense, and truth be told, Hawaii is a mecca of farm to table and small batch production. From fresh seafood to island raised beef, surfboards to clothing, Hawaiians are constantly serving up local products. Maui onions, Kona coffee, mahi mahi. More than just a slick marketing angle, its at least a love affair, if not a matter of personal pride.
Rum, of course, has always been associated with the islands and, with an abundant supply of sugarcane, Hawaii is no different. A quick peek into any ABC Store reveals silvers, golds, darks, and spices from a number of different local labels, as well as other spirits including vodka and even a moonshine.
Here is a Pineapple Whaler made with Old Lahaina Gold.
Pour 1 1/2 oz rum over ice in highball glass. Add 2 oz pineapple juice and top with ginger beer. Garnish with slice of pineapple.
