Celebrate #NationalRumDay with a Truly American Rum

Sunday, August 16, 2015
The waning weeks of summer are upon us. Our longest day of the year has come and gone, and night's curtain is dropping earlier and earlier with each sunset. While falling foliage and Halloween costumes may be just around the corner, there are still a few warm weather festivities left to enjoy on the cocktail calendar and National Rum Day certainly fits the bill. Commemorated on August 16th for no clearly discernible reason, the day is nevertheless a celebration of the first truly American spirit. Rum was the product of the very first distilleries built in the colonies and became a staple of commerce among the major New England ports by the eighteenth century. That era may have passed, but American made rum is no longer a relic of history, as one producer in San Leon, Texas has gone to great lengths to revive the tradition.

Situated a few miles outside of Houston and skirting the waters of Galveston Bay, Eagle Point Distillery is the creation of Kelly Railean, and source of her namesake Railean spirits. Beginning her quest to breathe new life into the legacy of American Rum in 2005, Ms. Railean has taken great care in the selection of her ingredients and the implementation of her distilling techniques. Using only Grade A sugar cane molasses harvested along the Gulf Coast, Railean Rums are produced in small batches, which allows for better quality control during the creation of the spirits. Some of these batches are distilled multiple times, resulting in a clear, smooth, silver rum, while others are specially chosen to have their flavor profile broadened through the addition of spices and various degrees of aging in new, double-charred, American oak barrels.

With such great attention to detail, and a palpable sense of patriotism motivating them, it is no surprise that Railean Distillers received an official 'Made in the USA' certification by the Federal Trade Commission in 2011. This designation is the first of its kind to be bestowed upon an American Rum and recognizes that the full line of Railean products are not only crafted in the United States, but that each bottle bears the fruit of homegrown ingredients and manpower. This level of dedication, to both quality and loyalty to country, make Railean an easy choice for any American's National Rum Day celebration.

Two of Railean's standout offerings are the Spiced Rum and Reserve XO. Both have enjoyed some maturation in their respective charred-oak barrels, though the XO is aged a bit longer and is actually a blend of select batches. The single-distilled Spiced Rum is livened up by various botanicals, and its pale amber appearance has an appropriate caramel/vanilla nose, smelling sweet but very pleasant. Easy to sip neat or with ice, this rum has subtle flavors and only a mild bite, which means it is also a versatile addition to any bar and a significant upgrade from many other spiced selections. The XO, by contrast, is a more refined spirit; it possesses a deeper, golden honey hue and its scent brings more heat into the nostril, mixed with notes of chocolate and toffee. There is very little burn, however. When the Reserve reaches your throat it has a smooth taste and a welcome finish which lingers nicely in the mouth and, being so good on its own, should really only be mixed with ice if you need to beat the heat,

A perfect companion for hot August days and nights, these two American rums exemplify the reason we have a National Rum Day in the first place, embodying the holiday with a spirit that the entire nation can be proud of.

Just in time for the holidays, 2bar Spirits has released the 2nd batch of their 2bar Bourbon. The first batch of their all local, made in Seattle bourbon sold out in less than 2 weeks (you see what we're doing with the 2 there?) and batch #2 was bottled but 2 days ago. It is bottled in 375ml glass at 100 proof and is available in the 2bar Spirits tasting room or a number of other locations around the Sound.

craft spirits handcrafted micro-distillery Montana Montgomery whiskey

Montgomery on the Slow Road to Whiskey

Monday, November 18, 2013
As much as I enjoy their tasting room, its sometimes a bigger pleasure to enter Montgomery Distillery through the back door. There is just a certain amount of intrigue, like walking up to the entrance of an underground speakeasy, associated with it. No brass, no fanfare, not even a logo to announce what lies within. Just a wrought iron gate and a roll up garage door.

Inside, however, beneath the cold glow of fluorescent lights, one is almost sure to encounter the warm handshake of Ryan Montgomery, which is what really makes coming in the back door such a sublime experience. Ryan could easily be the poster child for craft distilling; curious, inspired, enterprising, industrious are all words that leap to mind while talking with him. His enthusiasm for craft is infectious, and every visit with him another opportunity to learn and grow.

Growing is currently what Montgomery Distillery is all about. With a solid foundation established on the success of their Quicksilver Vodka and Whyte Laydie Gin, Ryan is now focusing on the spirit that really gets him excited: whiskey.

Whiskey is the bane of all microdistillers. Its the spirit everyone wants most to make, yet the one that is most difficult to launch from a financial standpoint. Investing in a product that may take a year or more to return a single dime? Hardly the most sensible tact for a fledgling business.

Thankfully for us there are people like Ryan, people with the perfect ratio of business savvy, daring and faith to take on the daunting task of creating something wonderful, then shelving it for one to 30 years. All in the name of taste.

When I stopped by to take a look, Ryan related their plans in whirlwind fashion, sharing information not only on their whiskey but other offerings they are experimenting with, such as an aquavit. He told me about their recent collaboration with Big Sky Brewing, in which Montgomery distilled 1200 gallons of Scapegoat Pale Ale down to one barrel of spirits, casking it in a Buffalo Trace bourbon barrel that had already been filled once with Big Sky's Imperial Barley wine. In another interesting development, Montgomery had acquired an often hard-to-come-by sherry cask that was to also be used in their whiskey-aging efforts. Finally, he led me to the barrel rack and withdrew a sample of their barley Single Malt.

Already the immature whiskey had taken on a nice amber color, and the taste mellow enough to evoke curiosity about the finished product. Standing on the testimony of their other spirits, one begins to see evidence of Montgomery's mantra. It's not enough to be small, or local, or different. Ultimately, success is measured on whether it tastes good.

Currently, Montgomery has a number of barrels racked, with 7 barrels of Single Malt whiskey slated for release in early 2016, followed by a rye later in the season. Their goal is to reach 80 cases per month, and hopefully turn Ryan's whiskey dream into a Montgomery Distillery staple.

Miles & Miles

Sunday, November 17, 2013
Lotuff, a New England handcrafter of possibly the best leather bags in America, has recently released a brilliant lookbook titled Fall on Block Island.

Based around the visual travel diary Miles & Miles, Lotuff dispatched their friends Sarah and Stefaan to the tiny island of Block Island about 7 miles off Rhode Island's coast with several of their bags in tow. The resulting lookbook is well worth the view, and certainly a stunning introduction to Lotuff's exquisitely crafted leather goods.

Holiday Releases from Catoctin Creek

Wednesday, October 30, 2013
Autumn is harvest time, when the summer's bounty is gathered and shared amongst family and friends. Catoctin Creek is doing their part this season by releasing not one but two limited edition fruit brandies, with release dates perfectly coordinated to fill an empty spot at the Thanksgiving table.

Here is their press release:

Just in time for the holidays, Catoctin Creek is thrilled to announce the seasonal releases of is Short Hill Mountain Peach Brandy and 1757 Virginia Brandy. Last year, both of these brandies sold out in a very short period of time. This year, we have increased our production and will have more bottles to offer.

On November 2 at noon, Catoctin Creek will release the Short Hill Mountain Peach Brandy from their tasting room on Main Street in Purcellville. The peach brandy is made entirely from Bluemont peaches, fermented and distilled and then aged in white oak barrels, bottled at 40% ABV. The peach brandy is not a sweet liqueur, but rather a dry brandy done in the style of something one would find in Germany or France. There are less than 1000 total bottles of the peach brandy this year, and will be sold exclusively at the distillery tasting room.

On November 16 at noon, Catoctin Creek will release its 1757 Virginia Brandy from the tasting room. This brandy is made from Seyval blanc and Chambourcin wine grapes from Tarara and Fabbioli Cellars, aged in Bordeaux red wine casks for a minimum of two years, and bottled at 40% ABV. 1757 is the first commercial grape brandy ever produced in the Commonwealth, and around 1100 bottles will be available this year.

"We are always excited to put out our hyper-local fruit brandies," said Becky Harris, owner and chief distiller at Catoctin Creek. "These brandies are collaborations with some of Loudoun's great wineries, like Bluemont, Tarara and Fabbioli, and the results are always wonderful."

Catoctin Creek Short Hill Mountain Peach Brandy - 40% ABV, 375ml, SRP $42.30. Star-K certified.

Catoctin Creek 1757 Virginia Brandy - 40% ABV, 750ml, SRP $49.80.

Distribution Expands for Collier and McKeel

Wednesday, June 5, 2013
Good news for those sour-mash fans who enjoy the unique flavor of Tennessee whiskey. Collier and McKeel, a small batch producer of whiskey in the Tennessee tradition, has inked a deal with The Vintner Group and will be joining their American Still Life catalog of artisanal spirits. Here's the story according to their recent press release:

"Collier and McKeel, the only handcrafted Tennessee Whiskey to be distilled in Nashville, is expanding its reach: as many as a dozen new states could enjoy the product soon as part of a new agreement with Virginia-based premium wine and spirits distributor The Vintner Group.

The distribution agreement will see Collier and McKeel headed to high-end package stores and fine restaurants in Washington, D.C., Delaware, Maryland and Florida immediately, with states like Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Illinois and Indiana coming in the next few months. Additionally, Deep South states like Louisiana and western states such as Arizona and Washington could be added to the mix.

Mike Williams, proprietor and master distiller at Collier and McKeel, says it’s particularly gratifying to reach beyond Tennessee’s borders to share a product that’s made with his own hands.

“It’s a labor of love, to be sure… we make it the hard way,” Williams said. “A lot of great whiskey is made by computers, and some of that is relabeled simply to drive sales. We believe Collier and McKeel is special in that we have our hands in every step of the process, from the grinding of the corn to the bottling.”

Distilled on the Speakeasy Spirits campus in west Nashville, Collier and McKeel was introduced in 2011 as one of Tennessee’s first new sour-mash whiskeys in generations. It remains the only handcrafted brand to be distilled in the state, following the Lincoln County process of charcoal mellowing that defines Tennessee Whiskey."
